U.S. President Donald Trump stated that CIA Director John Ratcliffe's visit to Russia is "somewhat routine in nature." "He is there, you know, on quite a normal visit. I don’t want to disappoint anyone. We would like the war in Ukraine to come to an end. That war should never have started," Trump remarked.

The American side has not yet officially disclosed the specific purposes of Ratcliffe's visit. Political scientist Sergey Markedonov assessed that Washington might be interested in three main questions: whether Moscow intends to expand military operations in the autumn, the possibility of interim agreements between Moscow and Kyiv, and which actions by the U.S. Russia might consider crossing 'red lines.'

According to the expert, the timing of the visit was also likely not accidental; Washington may have sought to clarify the Russian side's plans for the autumn period.

Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the U.S. and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also did not rule out that the CIA director's personal visit could have been necessary to transmit closed information between the two countries.
