VIDEO: How Many Children Are Currently Living in Armenian Orphanages and How is Adoption Conducted
Days ago, the story of a newborn girl found on Halabyan Street quickly captured the public's attention.
More than 100 people have expressed a desire to adopt her. Such a significant interest in the fate of a child is, of course, good news. However, at the same time, it seems that society forgets that there are other children like this little one.
According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, as of August 13, there are 267 children being cared for in four facilities under its supervision: the 'Children's House' in Yerevan, the children's home in Gyumri, the 'Mari Izmirlian' home, and the specialized orphanage in Kharberd. These children have the legal status of children left without parental care, and some of them are eligible for adoption; each of them has their own story.
However, adopting a child does not mean simply picking one out; there is a clear procedure, and the best interests of the child are prioritized. First, the state examines whether you or your family meet the adoption requirements and can provide for the child's needs. The next step involves assessing the compatibility between the child and the prospective adoptive parent. In simple terms, it needs to be determined whether the family is suitable for that specific child, considering their age, health status, developmental characteristics, and other needs.
The final decision is made by the court. In the case of the found child, Sose, the adoption process cannot yet begin, as it is necessary to ascertain who her parents are.
According to existing regulations, a response must be obtained from the police indicating that the parents have not been identified, and this process can take 3-4 months. It is important for those who are currently expressing a desire to adopt to understand this. The desire is important, but adopting a child is not a decision made in one day. While the situation of this girl is being resolved, we must not forget the other children who live in care institutions and also need a family, love, and parental care.
