EU and EAEU Referendum Results May Upset Russia: Alen Simonian

If a referendum were held soon regarding Armenia's accession to the EU or EAEU, many in Russia would be upset by the reactions of the Armenian population, stated Alen Simonian, the Secretary of Armenia's Security Council, during a broadcast on the Dozhd TV channel.

“Even those who did not vote for our party are very offended by Russia's stance during the 2020 war and the subsequent events, as well as comments from various journalists, public, and state figures, including statements from the Belarusian authorities,” noted Simonian.

At the same time, he clarified that Armenia will make its own choice. “We will make our choice when that question becomes real. Currently, there are no concrete steps towards membership in the European Union. We do not want and do not intend to exit the EAEU,” emphasized Simonian.

He assured that the request directed to Russia regarding the management of railways by a third party is not a political move. “We ask the Russian side to demonstrate flexibility so that these railways can operate; otherwise, the current logic fits the expression ‘A dog in a manger.’ If we are unable to find a way out of the situation, Armenia may resort to court, as the operation of the railway is a matter of national security,” concluded Simonian.
