Singapore to Provide Over $55,000 Support to Families for Each Child

The Singaporean government will provide a total of approximately 70,000 Singapore dollars, which equates to more than 55,000 US dollars, in financial support to families for each child born, in an effort to combat declining birth rates. This was reported by the Financial Times.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the expansion of payments and parental leave systems designated for children. He stated that the government aims to ease the process of starting families and raising children.

Families are expected to receive around 55,000 dollars in support for each child until the age of 17. The program includes a payment of 10,000 Singapore dollars upon the birth of a child, as well as an equal amount for further education.

Additionally, childcare benefits will also be expanded, especially for large families. Furthermore, measures will be taken to facilitate the acquisition of the first home for families with children.

The rationale for these new measures stems from a record decline in birth rates in Singapore. In 2025, the birth rate was only 0.87 children per woman, whereas the rate necessary for natural population reproduction is about 2.1.

Singaporean authorities predict that by 2030, one in four residents will be 65 years old or older.
