Heat is Dangerous for the Heart
High temperatures and high humidity can increase the strain on the cardiovascular system. The Ministry of Health warns that in hot weather, the heart has to work more intensively, and the risk of complications is especially high among people with cardiovascular diseases.
During heat, blood vessels dilate, which can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, while the heart rate can increase. Excessive sweating can result in dehydration and the loss of essential electrolytes, increasing the burden on the heart and the risk of arrhythmias. High humidity also complicates the body’s natural cooling process as sweat evaporates less easily, raising the risk of overheating.
The Ministry advises that on hot days, one should drink an adequate amount of water, unless a doctor has prescribed fluid restrictions, avoid direct sunlight from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, wear light, loose, and light-colored clothing, refrain from heavy physical work during hot hours, continue taking prescribed medications without self-adjusting doses, and regularly monitor blood pressure and pulse.
Experts particularly urge individuals with cardiovascular diseases to follow medical recommendations during hot days and to prevent dehydration and overheating of the body.
