United States Officially Removes Syria from List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that this decision opens new opportunities for the country's economic recovery and development.

"The Trump administration continues to advance U.S. national security interests by striving to ensure peace and prosperity in the Middle East," emphasized Marco Rubio.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has also lifted sanctions against the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham movement that came to power in Syria at the end of 2024.

Syria has been on the terrorism sponsors list since 1979. In early July 2026, Donald Trump informed Congress of his administration's intention to change Syria's status.

Damascus has welcomed Washington's decision, labeling it as historic. Foreign Minister Assad al-Shayban stated that terrorism was a policy of Bashar al-Assad's regime, rather than a choice of the Syrian people.
