Expectations of Amnesty in Prisons: Will There Be Electoral concessions?
In recent days, active reports have been received from various correctional institutions regarding the anticipation of an amnesty in the near future. According to the newspaper 'Joghourdt', some inmates have expressed confidence that a process impacting several articles of the Criminal Code may begin, leading to their early release.
However, Mariam Melkumyan, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice of Armenia, has officially denied these reports. It is worth noting that this does not mean that such a process cannot begin in the future. The right to initiate an amnesty belongs to the Government and the National Assembly, and during election years, such initiatives are sometimes used as a political tool to gain potential votes from certain segments of society, particularly those in correctional facilities and their families.
Let us remind you that the upcoming parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 7, 2026. Although there is still a long time until the elections, political forces are already in the preparatory phase, and the use of such mechanisms cannot be ruled out.
