Armenia Is Not Consulting With Its EEU Allies About Joining the EU, Says Russian Foreign Ministry

A representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Armenian authorities are preparing for EU membership without consulting their allies in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Mikhail Agasandyan, Director of the First Department of the Commonwealth of Independent States at the Russian Foreign Ministry, emphasized that there are significant risks associated with Armenia's legislative preparations for joining the European Union. According to him, this process is being advanced by the Armenian side without any discussion with their EEU partners.

In March 2025, the National Assembly of Armenia decided to adopt a law to start the process of EU membership, which was ratified by President Vahagn Khachaturyan in April. For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted during a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that it is impossible to be part of both the EU and the EEU customs union simultaneously.
