Azerbaijan is trying to create an Armenia that is preparing to attack again: Simonian
For decades, both Armenia and Azerbaijan's political structures have been based on the idea of 'hating one another'. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonian. According to him, the Armenian government is managing to somewhat break these complexes within the Armenian people, explaining that we must live with our neighbors in this region, and there is no alternative.
Meanwhile, in Azerbaijan, there is still the logic that it is impossible to live in a country without creating an external enemy. "I think that is their difficulty — how to live, how to maintain that power and not have an external enemy on whom one can always refer to with all problems or can always threaten with," Simonian said during a press briefing with journalists.
The Speaker of the National Assembly is confident that a peace treaty could have been signed a year ago if there had been political will in Azerbaijan. He insists that politics is a trade. "It is an interstate trade—Azerbaijan can trade with Russia, Israel, France, the USA, the same way Armenia, Georgia, and all countries do. In that logic of trade, they have considered it incorrect. Now we have created a situation where the world is saying, 'brother, 17 points have been agreed upon, why are you not signing?'",
