Italy's First Female Prime Minister Officially Takes Office
On Sunday, Italy held a traditional ceremony for the symbolic handover of powers, marking the start of a new cabinet meeting. Outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi handed over the bell to his successor, Giorgia Meloni, leader of the 'Brothers of Italy' party, which won the parliamentary elections held on September 25, BBC reports.
On the same day, the new cabinet held its first meeting, comprising 24 ministers. Notably, Meloni's cabinet includes six female ministers, marking the government's progressive stance.
According to Corriere della Sera, the first leader Meloni will meet is French President Emmanuel Macron, who is arriving in Rome today. Additionally, she is scheduled to meet with Pope Francis on October 24 and have lunch with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
