Pope Francis Discusses Easing Tensions at the Armenian-Azerbaijani Border
Pope Francis believes that the recent tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have eased thanks to Russia's intervention, as reported by TASS. During a conversation with journalists on his return from Kazakhstan, the pontiff mentioned numerous conflicts and stated, “The tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia has somewhat lessened now, as Russia has acted as a guarantor.”
The Pope also emphasized the necessity of dialogue, advocating that it should always be maintained as a path toward understanding and peace. “The opportunity for dialogue should be granted to everyone, as there is always a possibility to change something through dialogue. During dialogue, different viewpoints can be presented; otherwise, we will close the last door leading to peace,” the Pope remarked.
It is noteworthy that on the night of September 13, Azerbaijani armed forces launched an attack along the state border of the Republic of Armenia, conducting military operations in the directions of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, and Gegharkunik regions. The Armenian Ministry of Defense reported that positions in Sotk, Vardenis, Goris, Kapan, Artanish, and Ishkhanasar were shelled. Strikes were also inflicted on civilian infrastructure. Preliminary data indicates that the Armenian side has suffered 105 casualties. The Ministry of Defense of Armenia has stated that calm prevails at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
