Rejecting the Declaration of Independence Means Rejecting the Independence of the Republic of Armenia: Sharmazanov

“The protection of the Declaration of Independence should be the primary concern of all pro-national and patriotic forces,” noted Edward Sharmazanov, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia's governing board.

He wrote: “The declaration of independence of Armenia on August 23, 1990, is one of the most glorious pages in the history of the Armenian people. Today, the Declaration of Independence is under threat. The regime openly speaks about excluding it from the new constitutional project. They consider the Declaration of Independence to be 'conflict-generating,' pouring water into the mill of Azerbaijani anti-Armenian propaganda.

The Declaration of Independence is about Armenia’s sovereignty and independence. It is about the citizens of Armenia and the Armenian people determining their own destiny. It is about having a historical collective memory and supporting national values. The Declaration of Independence is about building a democratic state.

As we can see, the current regime has long severed ties with these values, and that is precisely why it rejects the Declaration of Independence of Armenia. To reject the Declaration of Independence would mean to reject the independence of Armenia and establish a regime guided by Azerbaijani rhetoric. On one side is the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, and on the other side is the prospect of Azerbaijanization of Armenia,” wrote Sharmazanov.
