Hantavirus Spreads: Death Recorded in the US
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has officially confirmed a death resulting from hantavirus infection. A resident of Douglas County passed away due to complications from the disease.
According to experts from the Department of Health, the Sin Nombre strain of hantavirus is not new to Colorado and reappears in the region periodically, especially during the spring and summer months. The primary source of the infection is local deer mice.
This illness primarily affects the respiratory system, causing severe symptoms that can often be life-threatening.
Representatives of Colorado's health department have rushed to reassure the public, stating that this case is unrelated to the recent hantavirus outbreak reported on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Considering the localized nature of the infection, authorities are urging residents to strictly follow hygiene and safety rules. Specifically, it is advised to avoid direct contact with rodents and their droppings, including urine, saliva, nests, and materials used for nesting.
The department is currently working actively to identify the source and focal point of the infection. Preliminary hypotheses suggest that the disease spread as a result of contact with local rodents. However, epidemiologists assure that the risk of infection for the general public remains low.
