Moldova's Most Influential Oligarch Sentenced to 19 Years in Prison
The Buiucani District Court of Chișinău delivered a verdict on April 22 in the case of Vladimir Plahotniuc, the former leader of Moldova's Democratic Party. The businessman has been sentenced to 19 years in prison. The court found him guilty of forming and leading a criminal organization, as well as committing large-scale fraud and money laundering.
According to case materials, Plahotniuc embezzled more than $39 million and €3.5 million from three local banks: ‘Banca de Economii’, ‘Unibank’, and ‘Banca Sociala’. Investigators confirmed that the stolen funds were used for personal gain, including the purchase of an aircraft, the acquisition of real estate, payments for medical and tourism services, as well as various business investments and event organization.
Although the prosecution sought a 25-year prison sentence, the court imposed a lighter punishment. Plahotniuc's defense has already announced intentions to appeal the decision to the Chișinău Court of Appeals. It is noteworthy that the oligarch was not present at the court hearing.
Vladimir Plahotniuc fled Moldova following the regime change in 2019. He was arrested in Greece in July 2025 and subsequently extradited to Moldova in September. He is currently held in Chișinău’s No. 13 prison. This is not the only case against Plahotniuc; he is involved in several other criminal proceedings regarding passport forgery and various corruption schemes.
