“I consider what has happened a great success for two reasons,” says Pashinyan

Yesterday, the delimitation commissions of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on the designated border areas including Armenia's Baghanis, Azerbaijan's Baghanis Ayrum, Armenia's Voskepar, Azerbaijan's Asha Askipara, Armenia's Kiranth, Azerbaijan's Kherimli, Armenia's Berkaberd, and Azerbaijan's Kizil Hajili. This was announced today by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a government meeting.

“They have signed the descriptions of these border areas. I want to say that I consider what has happened a great success for two reasons. The first is that a very important cornerstone has been laid for the further development and strengthening of our sovereignty and independence. The second is that for the first time since independence, our republic officially has a delineated border, which will significantly increase the level of security and stability not only in the specified villages but also along the entire Armenia-Azerbaijan border,” he said.

The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude: “I want to thank the commission on delimitation and border security, led by Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, and I would like to thank all the members of the Security Council.”

Pashinyan touched upon a few details: “It has been recorded that the delimitation has been conducted based on the 1976 maps, which have undergone a procedural review in 1979. It was essential for us that the process of delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan was not about creating a new border, but reproducing the borders reaffirmed by the Alma-Ata Declaration. In other words, we are stating that we should not create a border; we should reproduce the borders that existed at the moment of the collapse of the USSR and have de jure legal significance,” Nikol Pashinyan noted.
