Georgia Closes Kazbegi Checkpoint Exits for Light Vehicles for One Month

Georgia has closed the exits of the Kazbegi checkpoint on the road from Armenia to Russia for light passenger vehicles for one month starting today. This information is provided by the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.

According to the statement, "Due to ongoing construction/restoration works aimed at adding new routes for light passenger vehicles at the Kazbegi customs checkpoint, the existing exits designated for light passenger vehicles crossing the state border will be temporarily closed for one month."

Movement of light passenger vehicles will be temporarily conducted through the backup exits designated for heavy trucks. Border crossing for passengers will continue around the clock without any changes or interruptions.

Once the restoration work is completed, the Kazbegi customs checkpoint will operate at full capacity as usual. It is likely that due to the temporary reduction of routes, there may be queues and congestion on the Georgian side.

The military road is the only land route connecting Armenia with Russia and is frequently closed due to adverse weather conditions. Georgia is constructing a road bypassing the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway (Gudauri-Kobi), which includes a nine-kilometer tunnel.
