Russia's Foreign Ministry Responds to Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Treaty

Russia supports the agreement of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This was stated by Denis Gonchar, the director of the fourth department for the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“We support the agreement of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Russian side is prepared to continue to assist Yerevan and Baku in finding points of contact, creating an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding. At the same time, we welcome initiatives by third countries that can complement our trilateral efforts, rather than being based on the logic of geopolitical games,” Gonchar stated.

According to him, within the framework of the implementation of trilateral agreements between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, several issues are being resolved, including the start of the delimitation and subsequent demarcation process of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, as well as the unblocking of economic and transport links in the region.

“In particular, we are ready to provide advisory support to the bilateral commission on delimitation issues, providing necessary cartographic materials,” Gonchar noted, adding that under the joint presidency of the Deputy Prime Ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, the trilateral working group is attempting to reach swift agreement on specific projects for the restoration and development of transport infrastructure.

Regarding the “3+3” format, Gonchar noted that preparations for the second meeting within this framework are underway, and that, by agreement of the parties, the doors are open for Georgia.

“Currently, preparation work for the second meeting of the '3+3' consultative regional platform is in progress. Information about the venue and dates will be announced. I am confident that the format fully corresponds to Georgia's interests, for which the 'doors' remain open by agreement of the participating countries,” Gonchar said.

Gonchar emphasized that Moscow considers the active launch of “3+3” to be appropriate for the development of cooperation between the countries of the South Caucasus and their neighbors. According to the diplomat, such cooperation implies collective discussions of issues, meaning that political tensions are not exacerbated, but rather contribute to deepening mutual trust.
