Biden Used the Term Genocide Based on Historical Data: U.S. Response to Turkish Media
The Turkish state news channel TRT Haber sent an inquiry to the U.S. State Department regarding U.S. President Joe Biden's use of the term "genocide" during his April 24 speech. This was reported by the Baghramyan Telegram channel.
The Turkish broadcaster specifically asked how it came to be that Biden left the issue of labeling the atrocities in Ukraine as "genocide" to the discretion of an international investigation, while he unequivocally labeled the events of 1915 as genocide.
According to the Turkish state television, the response states that the reason behind President Biden's use of the term "genocide" concerning the 1915 events are the reports from officials of the U.S. Department of State who served at that time in the Ottoman Empire.
"The use of the term genocide in President Biden's statement is based on historical records prepared by U.S. State Department officials serving in the Ottoman Empire at the time, and these records correspond to contemporary research," the official response from the U.S. Department of State says.
