Putin and Erdogan to Attend the Groundbreaking of Turkey's Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Online

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony of the third energy block of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey via videoconference, TASS reports.

The start of construction for the third energy block in Turkey is considered a historic event. According to forecasts, Turkey, investing about $20 billion in the project, will be able to secure around $8 billion in profit during the first phase of construction alone.

The Turkish Minister of Energy has stated that the third energy block, currently under construction, is planned to be commissioned in 2023, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

This will be the first nuclear power plant built on Turkish territory. Its construction is part of a Russian-Turkish joint project, for which an intergovernmental agreement was signed back in 2010. The construction works are carried out by Akkuyu Nuclear Company, whose shares are almost entirely owned by the Russian company Rosatom.
