Around 20 Individuals Brutally Assault Two Investigators in Yerevan; Arrests Made

On August 21, 2026, a criminal case was initiated and is being conducted in the Yerevan Investigative Department regarding the brutal assault of two investigators from the Investigative Committee of Armenia by around 20 individuals who have friendly and familial ties with corresponding officers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ police.

The incident occurred in front of the aforementioned investigative unit, which has been classified as hooliganism. According to the Investigative Committee, both the police officer involved in the incident and two other individuals related to him have been arrested.

At the time of the incident, the police officer was under the influence of alcohol. Immediately after the arrest on August 21, the officer, recognizing the inevitability of criminal liability for his actions, reported through a defender that he had allegedly been subjected to torture. Following this, the investigating authority organized a medical examination for the arrested individual both in the administrative building and in relevant medical institutions, which further refuted claims of alleged violence.

Urgent evidentiary and procedural actions are being undertaken as part of the criminal proceedings to uncover the circumstances of the alleged crime and to hold all responsible individuals accountable.
