The upcoming presidential elections in France could pose serious challenges for NATO, as the selection of the next leader threatens to create divisions within the alliance.

"NATO is bracing for the very real possibility that France's next president could create a huge rift within the alliance," states a publication by Politico titled "NATO's Next Nightmare: The French Presidential Elections." According to Politico, recent polls indicate that nearly half of French voters support candidates who hold negative views towards the alliance.

Among these candidates are Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the founder of the leftist France Unbowed party. The magazine notes that their potential victory and the subsequent division regarding NATO could call into question the deployment of French forces in Romania and Estonia under the NATO framework.

The presidential elections in France are scheduled for April 18, 2027, with a second round set for May 2 if necessary. Current President Emmanuel Macron will not be able to participate as he is serving his second consecutive term.

Marine Le Pen, who is expected to run, gained this opportunity following a sentence reduction related to the misuse of funds in the European Parliament earlier this July.
