Russia Could Mediate Between the US and Iran, Media Reports
The National Interest publication evaluates that the Russian Federation has the necessary capability to organize negotiations on nuclear issues between the United States and Iran.
According to the report, taking into account the common interests of Moscow and Washington in the field of non-proliferation, Russia's involvement in Iranian civil nuclear facilities, and its understanding of Tehran's internal calculations, participation from the Russian side can be seen more as an advantage than a disadvantage for the US.
Kremlin support, similar to the negotiations during the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, could strengthen global non-proliferation efforts and ensure the presence of a mediator familiar to both the Iranian and American sides in the bilateral agreement drafting process.
The author believes that the positive relationship between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin makes cooperation in this direction entirely possible. At the same time, earlier in August, The New York Times reported that as part of a potential deal, the United States is demanding that Iran dilute its nuclear fuel for the purpose of later utilizing it either in US or other countries’ nuclear power plants.
