The United States has imposed a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods, which is expected to affect approximately $20 billion in exports. According to the Associated Press, these tariffs pertain to about 5% of U.S. imports from Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that retaliatory measures will be taken 'with precise dollar accuracy' to protect domestic workers and businesses.

Despite decades of trade disputes between the neighboring countries, with the U.S. trying to restrict the importation of Canadian lumber and Canada countering with limits on American dairy products, Canada remains one of the closest allies of the U.S. in both economic and political spheres. However, due to the current policies under Donald Trump, the Canadian Prime Minister has indicated that America has changed, and the nations will not return to their former relations. This is compounded not only by U.S. tariff policies but also by Trump's numerous statements suggesting that Canada should become the '51st state.'

A public petition launched in Canada on July 21, calling for the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador, has already gathered 248,000 signatures. One of the reasons cited is that Ambassador Pete Hoekstra justified Trump’s remarks.

The Associated Press highlights that the trade war with Canada also carries risks for the U.S., as over 70% of U.S. exports come from Canada. The tariffs on Canadian goods could increase inflation in the U.S., which would be unfavorable for Trump’s administration ahead of the congressional midterm elections in November.
