Messi Fined for Unsportsmanlike Conduct in MLS Match
The Major League Soccer (MLS) Disciplinary Committee has imposed a fine on Lionel Messi, the captain of Inter Miami, following a regular season match against the Philadelphia Union that ended in a 2-2 draw.
During stoppage time in the second half, there was a dispute between the Argentine forward and Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan, during which Messi struck the opponent's neck. The league identified Messi's actions as a violation of the regulations regarding physical contact with an opponent's head, face, or neck; however, they refrained from issuing a suspension.
The exact amount of the financial penalty has not been disclosed. In the same match, Messi scored a goal, which was his first since returning to the field after a family loss.
