FIFA President Infantino Faces Potential No-Confidence Vote
The three major regional confederations of world football are discussing the possibility of a no-confidence vote against FIFA President Gianni Infantino. According to Reuters sources, these confederations include UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF.
Dissatisfaction with Infantino has increased following his proposal to sell stakes in a new commercial structure related to FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors. The three confederations opposed the initiative and accused FIFA leadership of violating principles of transparency, consultation, and governance.
One Reuters source noted that there is "no way out" of the current situation; Infantino must either decide not to run for re-election in March 2027 or his opponents could move toward a no-confidence vote.
According to FIFA’s charter, the organization’s council can convene an extraordinary congress at any time. It is also obliged to do so if at least one-fifth of FIFA's 211 member associations submit a written request. However, the charter does not specify a particular procedure for a no-confidence vote against the president.
UEFA has not officially confirmed that such a vote is being discussed, but has referenced its previous statement indicating that a review of FIFA’s leadership and governance structure should be "comprehensive and fundamental," and that no options should be excluded.
Infantino has declared his intention to run for re-election in March 2027. He continues to enjoy significant support among FIFA's members, particularly in Africa. The president of the African Football Confederation (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has stated that Infantino continues to have the continent's backing. Additionally, six Arab football associations, including those from Qatar and Morocco hosting the 2030 World Cup, have publicly supported Infantino.
According to a Reuters source, UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF are inclined towards the option of a no-confidence vote, but they fear that an unsuccessful attempt may strengthen Infantino's position ahead of next year's elections.
The crisis at FIFA has intensified following the departure of Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour, who criticized the investment program and stated that staff were misled. FIFA Vice President Sandor Csanji has also retracted his support for Infantino, calling Lamour's exit "the last straw.
Pressure has also come from the European Football Clubs organization, representing over 800 clubs. According to Reuters, it has warned FIFA that member clubs may withdraw from men's and women's club World Championships if their governance concerns are not addressed.
Despite the growing pressure, none of Infantino's potential rivals have publicly announced their candidacy yet. The deadline for nominations is November 18.
