EU to Increase Funding for Morocco to Combat Illegal Migration
The European Union plans to increase funding for Morocco aimed at strengthening border protection and combating illegal migration.
“We are already working with Moroccan authorities to establish a more structural and forward-looking partnership with the EU. We can enhance border management and early warning systems, as well as increase technical and financial support to Morocco,” stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Between 2021 and 2024, the EU has already allocated 222 million euros to Morocco for migration management purposes and is set to provide an additional 190 million euros by the end of 2027.
The new funding is expected to be included in the strategic and comprehensive partnership agreement currently being developed between the EU and Morocco, which Brussels aims to finalize by the end of 2026.
