US May Announce Agreement on Hormuz Strait Today: Axios

The United States is nearing an agreement regarding the Hormuz Strait and is expected to announce it today. This is reported by Axios, citing two regional sources and a representative of the U.S. administration.

According to the publication, U.S. President Donald Trump decided on Saturday to forgo plans for large-scale military operations for the time being to allow more time for diplomatic efforts.

However, if an agreement is not reached in the coming days, Washington does not rule out the possibility of major military operations against Iran.

The agreement under discussion proposes a 60-day temporary regime between Oman and Iran in the Hormuz Strait. During this period, vessels entering the Persian Gulf will navigate through a northern route passing through Iranian territorial waters, while those exiting will take a southern route through Omani territorial waters. No transit fees will be charged during this time, and both parties will begin demining the central area of the strait to allow for bilateral navigation under a permanent agreement in the future.

Axios notes that three weeks ago, the parties were already close to such an agreement, but Iran had resumed attacks on vessels, escalating the situation and almost leading to a large-scale war.

In addition to Oman and Iran, Qatar, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have also played a mediating role in the negotiations. The White House has been actively involved in the negotiation process. In recent days, phone calls have taken place between U.S. special representative Steve Hentoff, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi.

According to sources, Abbas Araqchi had preliminarily agreed to the proposal late last weekend, but final approval from Iran's supreme leadership was necessary. Axios has reported that this process was completed on Tuesday, and now the parties are preparing to officially announce the agreement.
