Major Shipping Companies Appeal to the UN to Oppose Fees in the Strait of Hormuz

Eight of the world's largest shipping associations have appealed to the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), calling for opposition to any initiatives aimed at imposing mandatory fees or transit taxes on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by Bloomberg.

In a joint letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on August 3, the organizations noted that the imposition of such fees would set a dangerous precedent and could be applied in other critical maritime straits worldwide in the future.

They emphasized that any transit fee, regardless of its name, would disrupt the international legal framework that governs the freedom of navigation in international straits. The letter was signed by leading industry organizations, including the International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, and the World Shipping Council.
