US Strikes Iran Again: Explosions Reported in Several Cities
US military officials have announced new strikes against Iran after a brief pause, characterizing the actions as a response to Tehran's attempts to attack American forces stationed in the region. On the previous day, President Donald Trump declared that following an Iranian attack on a US military base in Jordan, Washington would deliver a "very strong" retaliatory strike.
"At 8:00 PM Eastern Time today, US armed forces began striking Iran. These actions are a powerful response to Iranian attempts to attack American troops in the Middle East," the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated on the X social network. CENTCOM reported that the "series of powerful strikes" has concluded. According to the announcement, dozens of targets belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were hit, including command centers, missile and drone launch sites, as well as coastal defense infrastructure.
Reuters, citing Iranian media, reports that explosions have been registered in several southern regions of Iran. State television has reported explosions in Ahvaz, while Tasnim agency noted that a residential area on Qeshm Island was also struck by missile fire. Reports of explosions have also come from Bushehr, which is home to a nuclear power plant being constructed with Russian involvement.
These are the first US strikes following President Trump’s decision on Friday to halt 13 consecutive nights of reciprocal bombings to create an opportunity for negotiations to resume. At the same time, Axios reported that the parties continue to exchange strikes for the tenth consecutive night, but the possibility of returning to negotiations remains intact.
