Merz Preparing Secret Plan Against Kremlin Allies in Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is developing a secret package of measures designed to prevent pro-Russian regional governments from blocking the movement of NATO troops in times of crisis. This was reported by The Telegraph.
Berlin is concerned that after the September elections, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party may gain an absolute majority in several eastern federal states and use its administrative powers to create obstacles for allied forces.
Particularly alarming is the situation in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Authorities estimate that governments under the control of the AfD could delay troop movements through bureaucratic procedures, police actions, and the management of transportation infrastructure.
NATO believes that such a scenario aligns with Moscow's strategy. "Putin hopes to weaken the alliance's response actions with the help of political allies," The Telegraph reports citing sources.
Germany plays a key role in NATO's military logistical support system. Almost all routes for relocating forces to NATO's eastern flank pass through German territory, making the country a "NATO logistical hub."
However, many diplomatic and customs agreements are required for troop movements in peacetime, and complete force deployment can take up to six weeks. This makes the system vulnerable to cyberattacks and other hybrid threats.
The German Ministry of Internal Affairs is already working on mechanisms to bypass regional authorities' decisions and enhance the protection of critical infrastructure and key specialists. There is also a discussion about potentially limiting the access of regional leaders under AfD control to intelligence briefings.
At the same time, authorities are facing serious constitutional obstacles. To fundamentally simplify the military logistical support process, it is necessary to establish a specific "heightened alert mode." This requires the support of two-thirds of Bundestag deputies, which is extremely difficult to secure under the current political configuration.
