Trump's Decisions Signify the Collapse of NATO: Former Secretary General
The former Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has stated that the recent decisions made by the United States indicate a collapse of the alliance. According to Rasmussen, the withdrawal of American troops from Germany and the reconsideration of the deployment of Tomahawk missiles are dangerous signals.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has already confirmed that he currently does not expect the delivery of these missiles, although he does not rule out changes in the future. Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to reduce the number of troops in Germany by 5,000.
In an interview with Welt, Rasmussen noted that Trump’s actions cast doubt on Europe’s defense and the commitment to Article 5, prompting Europeans to consider their own defense capabilities.
This new structure should include countries willing to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense spending and take on security guarantees. The program also aims to eliminate the blockage of military operations by individual states and remove those members who fail to meet obligations.
At the same time, Russia has expressed concern regarding NATO's activity and troop buildup near its borders. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed a willingness for dialogue, provided that the West abandons its policy of militarization.
