Number of Executions in Iran Revealed Over Three Months
The Iranian authorities have carried out an average of five executions per day during the first four months of 2026. The Abdulrahman Boroumand Foundation for Human Rights reports that at least 612 executions have been officially recorded in Iran during the first 117 days of this year. The fifteen instances of the highest penalty imposed in the last three weeks are primarily linked to charges grounded in political motivations.
According to human rights advocates, among those executed are at least 21 political prisoners and protesters, most of whom were detained during mass protests that took place in January 2026. An international report notes that the actual number of executions may significantly exceed published figures. This is a result of the opaque functioning of the country's judicial system and restrictions on access to information.
In particular, the occasional internet blackouts in Iran create additional complications for human rights organizations in fully documenting and publicizing cases. The situation in the Islamic Republic remains under the scrutiny of the international community, given the rising trends in the application of the death penalty. Experts from the foundation assert that the lack of transparency hinders the ability to form a clear understanding of the legal bases for all convictions. However, existing developments indicate a tightening of punitive actions amid domestic political tensions.
