Martial Law in Ukraine to Be Extended: Details
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted draft laws to the Verkhovna Rada regarding the extension of martial law and general mobilization in the country. According to the proposed documents, which have already been published on the official parliamentary website, the special regimes are set to be extended for another 90 days, starting from May 4.
The submitted drafts are currently in the discussion phase within the relevant committee. After receiving a positive conclusion, they will be put to a general vote among the deputies. This will mark the 11th consecutive extension of martial law and mobilization, declared since February 24, 2022 (editor's note: a total of 19 extensions).
It is noteworthy that under the current legal regime, there are constitutional restrictions on electoral processes in Ukraine. Specifically, due to martial law, presidential, parliamentary, or local government elections are not conducted in the country. It is important to remember that President Zelensky's official term is set to expire on May 20, 2024, but he continues to serve based on the state of emergency.
