Garnik Danielyan Addresses Transportation Situation
Recently, I commented on the potential negative consequences of the illegal order issued by Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan. Garni Danielyan, a member of the 'Hayastan' faction in the National Assembly, wrote this on his Facebook page.
“Let me remind you that Avinyan, using threatening language, called on drivers to personally demand payment from passengers, otherwise they would face wage deductions. I noted that such a demand, which is outside the law, would create tension between drivers and passengers. Unfortunately, I was not mistaken. There have already been incidents where arguments have escalated to stabbings. Such an incident was recorded yesterday, which I strongly condemn.
It must be understood that the drivers are not the culprits and responsible parties for the situation, but rather those who issue illegal orders. I urge our compatriots to refrain from getting into arguments with drivers. At the same time, no one can compel passengers to pay; this is outside the drivers' professional obligations.
I receive daily reports from our compatriots concerning the disgraceful situation in public transport: unpleasant conversations, mutual insults, and heightened tension occur every day. Drivers have also been instructed not to open the back doors at stops until the new passengers enter through the front doors and make their payments. This has further escalated the situation. It feels as though the ultimate goal of this government is to foster public division and sow seeds of hatred. After the change of power, our efforts should be aimed at restoring public solidarity,” he wrote.
