Another Earthquake Hits Kamchatka: Aftershocks Expected
A powerful earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck Kamchatka, and aftershocks are anticipated to follow. The process of aftershocks is expected to manifest with new events in the coming months, as reported by the Institute of Seismology of the Russian Academy of Sciences to TASS.
"The powerful earthquake near the shores of Kamchatka is the most severe since 1952. According to authorities, its magnitude reached 8.8. A high alert regime has been introduced in Kamchatka. This morning, a strong earthquake was also felt in Severo-Kurilsk, after which a tsunami warning was declared. The maximum wave height reached approximately 200 meters, and 2,400 residents in the area were evacuated to safe locations. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean, with earlier warnings issued by the authorities in Japan, the USA, and the Philippines. The aftershock process is expected to reveal significant events in the upcoming months," the Institute of Geology and Seismology of the Russian Academy of Sciences stated.
Following the earthquake, seismologists have recorded around 1,000 aftershocks in Kamchatka.
