Hybrid War Against Armenia Funded by Russia, Says Alen Simonian
“Remember that there is life beyond Facebook,” stated Alen Simonian, the speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, during a press briefing with journalists.
“I understand that large amounts of money are being spent from various sources, particularly from our northern neighbor, Russia,” Simonian said, asserting that a hybrid war is being waged against Armenia. He added, “This hybrid war becomes more active, for instance, when various commentators on Russian television, often featuring individuals with distant Armenian last names, attempt to change power in Armenia and announce rallies. I warn you that this will become even more pronounced in 2026. I am not afraid to voice this—this will have the opposite effect, and the X rating of the government you mentioned will double.”
In response to a question about the threat of a coup, he stated, “I do not see any threat of a coup from anyone, because I trust the people of Armenia.” He noted that these are not merely words but are based on experience. “Since the day of the war in 2020, the goal of changing power has been a priority for various poles and sides.”
When asked why the Prime Minister is undesirable for Russian parties, Simonian replied, “Our partners tell us the opposite.” In that case, why are they talking about regime change? He said, “There are very few examples of elected power in the post-Soviet space. Such precedents are rare and are a poor example. Secondly, due to historical events, Armenia is taking concrete steps to elevate its statehood and independence, which, naturally, does not please everyone, because Armenia is expected to always depend on some center, to have a face of a big brother looking over it—if that big brother or superpower is not there, they will be eaten up.”
