On July 12, a foreign national reported to the Meghri division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia that on July 11 at approximately 22:15, he had an altercation with an employee of the parking lot adjacent to the Meghri checkpoint related to the queue of vehicles, during which the employee hit him twice in the face with his fist.
In response to a query from Armenpress, Ministry spokesperson Narek Sargsyan stated that on the day of the incident, officers from the Meghri division of the police identified the person responsible for the bodily harm.
The 25-year-old resident of Agarak presented himself to the police, confessing to the act, thanks to the explanatory work of law enforcement. Both he and the documents have been sent to the Investigative Division of Syunik Province of the Investigative Committee,” Sargsyan elaborated.
Earlier, the Consul General of Iran in Kapan, Morteza Abedin Varamin, commented on the reports of the assault on the Iranian driver at the border, stating in an interview with Iranian NASRNEWS that the driver was doing well and had been discharged from the hospital. The Consul General mentioned that he personally visited the scene of the incident and met with local police officials to present their complaint. Varamin noted that the perpetrator of the incident is currently undergoing questioning.
Furthermore, emphasizing the economic and strategic importance of the Norduz border crossing, the consul pointed out that there has been a 60% increase in export and transit cargo from March to May of this year, which may cause dissatisfaction among some individuals and lead to such incidents and unforeseen events.
