Trump's Defense Requests to Delay Trial Until 2026
Former U.S. President Donald Trump's attorneys have requested the court to start the trial related to the Capitol riot in April 2026, according to AP reports.
It has been noted that the U.S. Department of Justice proposed to begin the trial on January 2, 2024. It is expected that the district judge will determine the final date during a court session scheduled for August 28.
Trump was indicted on August 2 in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. He faces up to five years in prison on two counts and up to 20 years on two other counts. During the first court session, which took place a day after the indictment, the former president was released rather than jailed, under the promise to appear.
He has described the trial as a “sad day for America.”
