Victorine Responds to Pashinyan: Media Needs Protection, It's Not Enough to Say that the Internet is Free

Considering the difficult and security situation in Armenia, it is necessary for the population here to be resilient, and we support those regions where we see security challenges. This was stated today, May 31, during the Armenian Democracy Forum in Yerevan by the head of the EU office in Armenia, Ambassador Andrea Victorine, citing Syunik province as an example, as reported by News.am.

She also spoke about press freedom: “Media are guardians of independence; they need to be protected, and it is not enough to say that the internet is free. Each case must be considered, and each should be discussed individually. Yes, if journalists are spreading misinformation, that must be addressed, but in general, it should be said that the media address specific issues, and we need investigative journalism. I would like to highlight this as a continuing commitment to protecting journalism and improving the position of journalism in Armenia. Many confuse facts and opinions; they need to be differentiated.”

She also emphasized inclusiveness: “This means truly targeting all vulnerable groups, whether they are people with disabilities or the LGBTQ community. There are cases that were shocking to me. I expect that civil society will defend and say that it should not be this way, that people should be able to live safely in this country. However, I also want the state to say that this should not happen in our country, so we can protect the rights of these people.”

The EU ambassador also noted the involvement of women in government and peace processes: “I am confident that women can find lasting solutions for peace and stability. I want to see greater representation of women.”

It is worth noting that during the same forum, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the press is free in Armenia.
