VIDEO: 'Why can't we exert pressure to resolve this tragedy?' British MP
It is essential to exert pressure for an independent investigation into the killings of Armenian prisoners of war and the reopening of the Lachin corridor. This issue was raised by British MP Rupa Huq during a question-and-answer session in the House of Commons.
Before the MP's speech, UK's Minister for Europe Leo Docherty spoke about the actions taken by Great Britain. 'We are striving to return to negotiations and peacefully resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. I spoke with Armenian Foreign Minister Mirzoyan on January 18 regarding the humanitarian situation. Yesterday I met with the Azerbaijani ambassador and emphasized the urgent need to reopen the Lachin corridor,' said Leo Docherty.
He also added that the Start Fund, of which the UK is a major donor, has raised £350,000 to support those affected by the current situation.
MP Rupa Huq noted that insufficient action is being taken to hold Azerbaijan accountable. 'This blockade has been ongoing for 50 days. As a result, children are at risk of malnourishment due to a lack of sufficient food and medicine. We have also seen human rights organizations document extrajudicial killings and abuses against detainees in Nagorno-Karabakh,' said Rupa Huq.
The MP also expressed outrage at the UK's Minister for Europe recently expressing expectations that the investigation by the Azerbaijani prosecutor's office would yield significant results. 'Why can't we exert pressure to ensure that this horrific tragedy receives international independent solutions?' the MP concluded.
In response, Leo Docherty reiterated that the UK wants to return to negotiations and peacefully resolve the conflict, an issue he plans to emphasize during his upcoming visit to the region in the coming months.
