Finland to Decide on NATO Membership in Days
Finland will make a decision on joining NATO within one week. According to TASS, this was stated by the country's Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
Earlier, a significant majority of members of the Finnish parliament had already expressed support for NATO membership. Erkki Tuomioja, the Deputy Speaker of the Finnish Parliament from the Social Democratic Party, noted that it is already clear that such a decision is backed by "the overwhelming majority of parliament members who want to see Finland in the alliance as soon as possible."
The ruling Social Democratic Workers' Party of Sweden had previously announced that a decision regarding the country's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance would be made on May 12, after which the party leadership would need to make a corresponding decision. If the decision is positive, an application for membership will be submitted to NATO, as other parties have already supported such a step. Most parliament parties have also opposed holding a nationwide referendum on this issue.
