The Polish authorities have already constructed over 50 km of barrier on the border with Belarus, RMF24 reports. Additionally, Polish border guards have recorded the first attempts to damage the structure.

According to the border service, a section of the metal fence has a breach approximately 30 cm wide, while attempts to dig at another location have been thwarted. Authorities have admitted that this could have been done by Belarusian border guards or migrants, RMF24 notes.

The Polish border service believes that the operation of the facility will be less problematic once authorities install cameras and motion sensors.

Earlier, Poland's Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński had stated that the construction of complete barrier structures on the border with Belarus would be completed by June 2022. He detailed that the length of the structure would be approximately 180 km, with walls standing at least 5.5 meters high.

The EU-Belarus border migration crisis began last summer, after Belarusian authorities loosened control over the flow of refugees amid deteriorating relations with the West. The situation escalated on November 8, when nearly 3000 illegal migrants appeared near the Polish-Belarusian border. These individuals had arrived from the Middle East and Africa, having legally flown into Belarus before heading to Poland and the Baltic states in hopes of entering the EU.
