Merkel Does Not Plan New Statements on Her Former Policy Towards Russia
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (who served from 2005 to 2021) does not plan to make new statements regarding her past policy towards Russia. This was reported today to the DPA agency by a representative of the former government leader, as conveyed by TASS.
According to the spokesperson, the written statements made by Merkel since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine are "still relevant, and no additional statements are planned at this time." On February 25, Merkel condemned the Russian military operation, calling it a "turning point in the history of Europe after the end of the Cold War." On March 4, she stated that she still believes her decision not to support Ukraine's expedited NATO membership in 2008 was the right one.
Merkel has faced criticism from local media in recent weeks for allegedly being insufficiently tough on Russia during her final years in office.
