Islamists Capture Entire City in Mozambique and Kill Dozens
Islamist militants have taken control of the city of Palma in northern Mozambique, holding it under their control for over five days, reports the Associated Press. Approximately 35,000 residents have managed to flee the city, with some seeking refuge in nearby villages and others hiding in jungles.
The military is awaiting assistance from neighboring South Africa to regain control of the city. It has been reported that dozens of civilians have lost their lives, many subjected to brutal executions, with some beheaded. Among the missing are 40 to 60 foreign nationals.
Reports suggest that the militants' attacks were motivated by the ongoing work on a French energy project near the city. Under the pretext of fighting French influence, the Islamists have terrorized the local population for over three years. As noted by France 24, the group responsible for the assault on Palma pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in 2019.
Information about the brutal executions carried out by the Islamists in Mozambique emerged in early March, revealing that they have been decapitating children in front of their mothers.
