EU and EAEU Referendum Results Could Upset Russia: Alen Simonyan

If a referendum on Armenia's membership in the EU or EAEU were held soon, the results would deeply upset Russia regarding how the Armenian population would respond. This was stated by the Secretary of Armenia's Security Council, Alen Simonyan, during a broadcast on the Dozhd TV channel.

“Even those who did not vote for our party are very offended by Russia's position during the 2020 war and the subsequent events, statements from various journalists, public and state figures, and from the Belarusian authorities,” Simonyan noted.

At the same time, he clarified that Armenia will make its own choice. “We will make our choice when the issue becomes real. Currently, there are no concrete steps towards joining the European Union. We do not want and do not intend to leave the EAEU,” Simonyan emphasized.

He assured that the request to transfer the management of the railways to a third party is not a political step towards Russia. “We are asking the Russian side to show flexibility, so that these railways can operate. Otherwise, the current logic falls into the expression ‘the dog is in the manger.’ If we cannot find a way out of this situation, Armenia may go to court, as the operation of the railway is a national security issue,” Simonyan concluded.
