Government Plans to Restore Railway Sections Between Armenia, Turkey, and Nakhchivan
The new program of the Government of Armenia focuses on the restoration and development of the country's regional transport links. The government intends to develop transportation infrastructure under the "Peace Crossroads" initiative, aiming to integrate Armenia into regional and international logistics routes.
The program envisions the reconstruction and operation of the railway segments connecting "Gyumri-Akhurik-Turkey's border" and "Yeraskh-Nakhchivan's border". It also plans to put into operation the railway infrastructure of the TRIPP route. The existing management system of the railway is also set to be reviewed to align it with the integration of Armenia into the international transport system.
Simultaneously, significant works on border infrastructure are planned. Specifically, the Meghri and Bagratashen checkpoints will be reconstructed, the Margara checkpoint will be expanded, and new checkpoints at Akhurik and Yeraskh, as well as logistics centers in Yerevan and Syunik, will be constructed.
The government program also includes plans to build and commission the Margara and Meghri bridges.
Another major focus of the transport program is road construction. Plans include modernizing and restoring 2,500 km of state significance roads and transportation objects, including 40 bridges and the Pushkin and Dilijan tunnels. The construction of the North-South road corridor will continue, specifically completing the reconstruction of about 32 km of the Kapan-Agarak road section and constructing approximately 60 km of new road between Sisian and Kapan. The Sisian-Kapan road construction project was previously highlighted in the government's documents as a priority project for the North-South corridor.
