US May Ban Chinese AI Imports for Data Centers

The US administration is preparing to restrict the import of new components intended for data processing centers (Data Center) from China in a bid to enhance the protection of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Reuters reports this, citing informed sources.

According to the publication, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is discussing a ban on the import of Chinese optical transceivers. These devices facilitate the transmission and reception of data over fiber optic connections and are widely used in data processing centers.

Washington believes that such restrictions will reduce the risks of data theft, infiltration of malicious software, and disruptions to the operations of American data centers serving artificial intelligence systems.

Sources indicate that the draft of the restrictions may be published by the end of the year, but its provisions could still change or be entirely rescinded.

In response, China has criticized the initiative, calling on the US to cease pressure on Chinese companies. Beijing has also stated that it will take "all necessary measures" if significant harm is done to its interests.

It is worth noting that earlier, the administration of Donald Trump had also announced restrictions on the import of new Chinese robots and inverters used in energy infrastructure.
