Narek Karapetyan Proposes to Accept Anti-Safarov Law
MP Narek Karapetyan from the 'Armenia' faction has stated that one of the main challenges for Armenia in the coming years is the signing of a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, but it must also ensure the demographic security of the country.
According to him, the peace treaty is crucial not only for the country's development but also for the return of Armenian prisoners held in Baku. At the same time, he expressed concern that Azerbaijan may try to establish a demographic presence in Armenia as part of the treaty.
Karapetyan pointed out that the idea of 'Western Azerbaijan' has become part of the state ideology in Azerbaijan, citing the country's education minister's statement that the return of Azerbaijanis to 'Western Azerbaijan' is of fundamental significance for the formation of a new national identity.
In this context, the MP proposed to adopt the so-called 'Anti-Safarov Law', which would prohibit Azerbaijanis from remaining in Armenia for more than 10 days, as well as acquiring real estate or land.
'We will present this proposal in the near future so that this issue is finally resolved at the legislative level,' Karapetyan said, adding that similar restrictions are also in place under Turkish legislation for Armenian citizens.
