According to the head of Finland's Ministry of the Interior, Spanish authorities have failed to reliably protect the external border of the Schengen zone, leading to a migration crisis. This statement by Rantanen followed a similar call from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“Countries that do not fulfill their obligations to protect the external border cannot be members of the Schengen zone,” wrote Finland’s Minister of the Interior on social media.

Previously, illegal migrants from Morocco reached the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa by swimming. According to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, this concerns 50,000 people. The country’s authorities have mobilized ground force units to support local police. This massive influx of people has become the largest in the region since 2021.
