Illegal Constructions Built on Shelter in Abovyan Street Being Demolished

Demolition works are underway today in Abovyan Street, Yerevan, targeting illegal constructions. The municipality clarified that these structures were built on top of a former shelter.

In an interview with Panorama.am, Avetik Babayan, the acting head of the public order protection service of Yerevan municipality, stated that the operations are based on a relevant decision by the mayor of Yerevan.

“There used to be a shelter underground in this area, which was subsequently seized by operators, and illegal constructions were built on it. All buildings from this section up to the path are illegal,” Babayan noted.

He added that the lease rights for the area are still in place, but the relevant agreement is expected to be terminated as well. Babayan mentioned that the owner was warned the day before about the demolition works, and the notification has also been published on the official website of the Yerevan municipality.

He pointed out that operators are warned in advance so that they can relocate their property and avoid losses.

When asked why such works are not announced earlier, Babayan explained that preliminary notifications could hinder the process, as operators often apply to the administrative court, which can temporarily halt demolition activities.
